Secret Invasion is contingent on the 2008 Marvel Comics narrative of the same name, which concentrates on the alien race of shape-shifters who’ve been coming to Earth for many decades. Brian Michael Bendis, the author of this eight-issue comic miniseries, meant for Secret Invasion for a direct sequel to that the Annihilation narrative, which premiered in 2006. Featured in the show are many superhero squads, such as the Mighty Avengers, New Avengers, Young Avengers, and the Wonderful Four.
Maybe among the very far-out theories on the internet is that Secret Invasion may have some form of tie-in using all the rumored Spider-Woman movies, which Olivia Wilde is thought to be working. In the comic books, the Skrull Empress Veranke utilizes her shape-shifting abilities to change to Spider-Woman, taking her place for a double-agent to get S.H.I.E.L.D. under the opinion of Nick Fury. But it’s more probable that the show will have to do with all the Captain Marvel narrative since that’s where the Skrulls were introduced.
The Secret Invasion series was first revealed by Marvel Studios at the Walt Disney Company’s Investor Day last year, along with two other comic-based series – Armor Wars and Ironheart. The shows are part of the company’s push to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe beyond the Avengers franchise, exploring different aspects of the comic books that tie into the OG superheroes’ stories.
While Secret Invasion will introduce a new team of Skrulls that will impersonate many of the superheroes on Earth, Armor Wars and Ironheart will look at the stories of two characters with ties to the Avengers’ founding member, Iron Man. Don Cheadle will return as James Rhodes, a.k.a. War Machine, in the former, while Dominique Thorne will portray Riri Williams, a genius inventor who created an advanced suit based on Tony Stark’s original invention, in the latter.
